My name is Shannon. I have been a Dental Hygienist since 1996 and have practiced at Malone Dentistry since we moved to Tennessee in 2013. I grew up in Northwest Iowa, the daughter of a a small town dentist. From an early age I was aware of the positive impact my dad made in his patients lives, not only because he was a great clinical dentist, but also because he had ethical, caring relationships with the friends and neighbors he had as clients. I knew that I wanted to work in the dental field...taking care of people the way a hometown neighbor would...the way my dad would.
In 1993, after four years of college, I married my high school sweetheart. We "dated" since I was 14 years old, and I had known him at church for many years prior to that. After we married I decided that dental hygiene, rather than dentistry, was the path I wanted to pursue. In 1996 I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of South Dakota. My degree included the ability to deliver local anesthetics and nitrous oxide sedation. After ten years of practice I completed advanced training in Expanded Functions at the University of Minnesota Dental School. Most recently I have been learning more about The Pankey Philosophy regarding restorative dentistry from our own, in-house Pankey Master Scholar....Dr. Malone! He is always teaching and mentoring us in our our own treatment rooms. It's a great way to learn and a great opportunity for professional growth.
Dental Hygiene was the perfect pathway for me! My husband's work moved us many times, and my degree afforded me the ability to find employment wherever we went. Since graduation, I have worked in 4 states, a dozen general dental offices, and a periodontal practice. I have experienced working with just about every type of person a hygienist could encounter. In spite of twenty-plus years of the daily grind (no pun intended) it just keeps getting better! I love coming to work everyday. I love working with our amazing team of caring providers. I love the beautiful mountain scenery I experience when I drive to and from work. I enjoy helping people become healthier and, of course, I enjoy cleaning teeth until they sparkle and shine! But what I MOST enjoy is building relationships with the people I encounter. I want to "know" and improve the lives of the people I serve. I want them to "know" me and that I have a heart for service. Being a member of this dedicated staff is one of the things I am most grateful for. I get to work with people who are like-minded, smart, experienced, and above all...have servant hearts! How lucky could I be?!!!
Certainly I like using our amazing technology, learning new techniques, and staying on top of the latest research. But I would have to admit that professionally, my favorite thing is helping an anxious or fearful patient learn to become relaxed during their dental visits. It is so rewarding to see those clients return and give me a big (healthy!) smile and a hug when we meet again. At that point I know I have helped make a positive impact in their lives!
When I'm not at work, I want to be outside in this beautiful place.... biking, hiking, walking, patio dining or sitting on the porch. I have two fantastic almost-grown kids, a big ol' goofy dog and an amazing husband. We all agree that we couldn't be happier to have landed here amidst the friendly people and beauty of East Tennessee."
“Since day one, I have enjoyed being a dental hygienist. There is always something new and exciting to learn regarding technology and health research, so continuing education is one of my favorite professional activities. The best part of being a hygienist, however, is developing relationships with patients! It is fulfilling to serve people who trust me and the information I share with them. Everyone here strives to make sure every patient leaves knowing we did everything we could to make their experience an exceptional one.”
